The Art Gallery at Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai Sets Up a Stellar Showcase

25/01/2023

MUMBAI, JANUARY 11, 2023: The Art Gallery at The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai – the iconic flagship hotel of Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) will participate in the prestigious Mumbai Gallery Weekend with a special showcase of key pieces from its permanent collection. Titled “Grey Mirrors of the Sea” – this first-of-its-kind exhibition has been curated by Mortimer Chatterjee and will showcase masterpieces by luminaries N.S Bendre, V.S. Gaitonde, K.K Hebbar, Ram Kumar, Akbar Padamsee, B Prabha, S.H. Raza, Jehangir Sabavala, Gulammohamed Sheikh and Laxman Shreshtha.

Starting with it’s opening at 5:00pm on Friday, January 12 2023, the exhibition will run through the weekend and be open to welcoming art enthusiasts, residents and guests from 11:00am-8:00pm daily. Located on the first floor of the Palace, the Art Gallery has been a city-icon since it opened its doors in the 60’s and then again in 2016. Masters such as Laxman Shreshtha, Jehangir Sabavala, MF Husain, amongst others, began their illustrious journeys in the art world from this space.

The art collection at the Taj can be largely attributed to the tasteful acquisitions made by Elizabeth Kerkar and Mrs. Soni in the 1960s and 1970s- a period where abstract art truly found its footing. Taj strives to be the platform where the cultural experiences of the past, present and future, coexist in harmony and showcase the true grit of the Indian heritage.

“The Art Gallery at the Flagship has always been at the epicentre of the art scene in Mumbai starting from the 60s. We are proud to be able to showcase some of our never-before-seen works to the discerning audience of art admirers who will explore the city during Mumbai Gallery Weekend and we hope to have many more Art centric programs in the year ahead – from curated Art Walks to immersive artist-led sessions for our discerning guests. With an art collection of 4,000 artworks in our repository, it is our constant endeavour to preserve and promote and support Indian art and culture for generations to come.”

Mr. Ritesh Sharma, General Manager – The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai

“For this year’s Mumbai Gallery Weekend, I am excited to curate the first presentation of a selection of paintings from the legendary permanent collection of the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower. The Taj Art Gallery has a storied history and it is only fitting that it plays host to Grey Mirror of the Sea.”
