Related imageNew Delhi, July 16th, 2018: One doesn’t have to be a football fan to acknowledge the unforgettable nature of yesterday’s sporting events. The Football World Cup final proved once again why football is one of the most popular sports on the planet. And while that was so, it also showcased how ordering food online is fast becoming commonplace in Indian cities. India’s leading food delivery service, Zomato, registered a record-breaking 600,000 orders on the day of the finale and achieved the mark of 13 million monthly orders.

India might be a cricketing nation, but the football finale certainly was a much-watched event by the Indians. By the time the match between France and Croatia went into halftime, Zomato was already registering ~125 orders per second.

“Yesterday was a great day for sports enthusiasts between the Wimbledon finals and the FIFA World Cup. The overall growth trends have been fantastic. While the top cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad are growing really fast, growth in tier-II and tier-III cities has also been really encouraging for us.” said Mohit Gupta, CEO – Food Delivery, Zomato

Zomato launched its online ordering and food delivery services in May 2015 and the food delivery service is currently available across 21 cities in India, i.e. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Kochi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Indore, Coimbatore, Vadodara, Nagpur, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Surat, Vizag, Bhopal, and Bhubaneswar. The company is currently at a monthly order run-rate of 13M; this is compared to 5.5M in March 2018 – that’s 2.5X growth in less than 4 months.

While Delhi ruled the chart scoring over 100,000 orders last night, it was closely followed by Mumbai and Bangalore. Interestingly, even tier-II and tier-III cities, many of whom recently joined the online ordering brigade, showed a remarkable boost in the daily figures. Unsurprisingly, the metropolitan cities had a lion’s share in yesterday’s growth.

It’s a well-known fact that the pleasure of watching football is accentuated by the presence of delicious food. Something Zomato’s data team noticed last night as chicken wings were ordered three times more than on any usual Sunday evening. However, chicken wings weren’t the only chartbuster on the list of food ordered. The battle was intense between biryani and pizza. By the day-end count, biryani was the show-stealer as it was ordered almost twice as much as its Italian rival. This Sunday historically remains the most active day for ordering food online on Zomato as the volumes are unmatched by weekdays.

Zomato recently launched Zomato Piggybank – a reward points program for its online ordering users who will earn 10% of the order value in their piggy bank and Zomato will donate ₹1 per order to an NGO on their behalf on every completed order. Zomato also turned 10 recently and carried a massive food drive across 30 cities on Saturday. The company, with help from Sequoia Capital and Robin Hood Army, donated over 250,000 meals and spread millions of smiles to the homeless and underprivileged.

Globally, Zomato is present in 24 countries and serves more than 50 million users every month. Every month, over 19 million users in India use Zomato to make informed food choices. It also seats more than a million diners through its table reservations platform. Zomato Gold is arguably one of the fastest premium membership programs in the country and has well over 400,000 subscribers.
