A bill that seeks to do away with the automatic nomination of the President of INC (Indian National Congress) to trust of Jallianwala Bagh had introduced in the house of people i.e. Lok Sabha on 8th July 2019. This move was strongly opposed by the Congress, with its leader Shashi Tharoor who was urging the government not to betray history and the heritage by removing the Congress President as the trustee of Jallianwala Bagh.
Tourism Minister of India, Prahlad Singh Patel, while introducing the bill, said: “The Bill was passed in the 16th Lok Sabha but could not be passed in Rajya Sabha.” While pointing out that the President of Indian National Congress has been a trustee since last 45-50 years, He also said that he will respond to each and every issue raised by the members of Lok Sabha during the debate on the bill.
What Was The Bill?
The bill amends the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Act, 1951. Under this, the Trustees of the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial will include the Prime Minister as the Chairperson, the President of Indian National Congress, the Minister in-charge of Culture (Central), the leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, the Governor of Punjab state, the Chief Minister of Punjab and three eminent persons nominated by the Central Government.
What Is The Current Bill?
The current bill, which was introduced by the Tourism Minister of India, seeks to do away with the automatic nomination of Congress President as a Trustee of Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial. It also clarifies that when there is no leader of opposition in Lok Sabha then the leader of the single largest opposition party in the Lok Sabha will be the Trustee of Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial.
