Ahead of Global Recycling Day on March 18, The Orchid Hotel Mumbai hosted over 120 students from CNM School to drive the Waste Management project to encourage innovation and environmental responsibility.
Mumbai, March 18, 2023: Over 120 students from CNMS School Vile Parle participated in an innovative recycling activity at The Orchid Hotel Mumbai to mark the occasion of Global Recycling Day. As an Ecotel hotel, The Orchid Hotel takes pride in promoting environment-friendly practices, and this activity was aimed at instilling the values of reduce, reuse, and recycle among the future generation of our country.
The students were first given a round of the waste management plant at the hotel premises, then shown how everyday waste and scrap is recycled to create products. For the Waste Management project, the students were given non-food waste items such as bottles, wires, LED lights, and coconut shells, which they used to create something innovative and creative for their school project - Best out of Waste. Orchid Hotel provided all the amenities needed for the project, including stationery, glue, scissors, and other necessary items. The three best projects were also honored as an encouragement to the students.
Kavita Sanghvi, the principal of CNMS School, expressed her excitement to host the event at Orchid Hotel, and she appreciated the hotel's support in making the project both fun and practical for the students. The Vice Principal, Aditi Vajandar, who was at the hotel along with the students said, “I am thrilled to see the students' end results and believed that it would be impeccable to see them learning the principles of recycling through this activity.
Apart from hosting the recycling activity, The Orchid Hotel Mumbai is also taking several measures to promote sustainable practices. The hotel's rooms have hangers made from recycled wood, bathroom slippers made from discarded towels, and in-room dining menus made from recycled paper. Toothbrushes, combs, and room tables are made from recycled wood, and laundry bags are made of jute, not plastic.
To save energy, the hotel has installed low-water flow aerators in all its taps and showers, and guests are encouraged to participate in eco-friendly practices through placards placed throughout the hotel. The hotel also uses natural sunlight during the day to save electricity, and all guest rooms and guest areas have LED lights for energy efficiency. The back of the house observes a shutdown of non-essential lights, and staff lockers and offices have a sensor-based light system.
The hotel also has a sewage water treatment plant that converts waste water into greywater for gardening and cooling tower use. The hotel's swimming pool water is purified using an Ozonator, which leaves no harmful chlorinated by-products in the water and is 3000 times faster than chlorine treatment.
