05/09/2023

I am writing to invite you to capture the heartwarming essence of Grandparents Day at Pritam Da Dhaba, an iconic culinary establishment in Mumbai. Owned by the fourth generation, this restaurant has an incredible history that began with Jaibir Singh Kohli’s beloved grandfather.

Pritam Da Dhaba, a culinary gem of Mumbai, has been serving delectable North Indian cuisine since its inception. What makes it truly exceptional is its rich heritage, dating back to the era of Jaibir Singh Kohli’s great grandfather. Passed down through generations, this restaurant has become a symbol of family traditions and exquisite flavors.

The restaurant embodies these values, and on Grandparents Day, they aim to create an unforgettable experience for the patrons. From nostalgic recipes that have been perfected over decades to the cozy ambiance reminiscent of family gatherings, Pritam Da Dhaba is the perfect place to honor this special day.

The history of Pritam Restaurant unfolds in 1942, as Prahlad Singh Kohli and his wife, natives of Rawalpindi, disembarked from a train at Dadar station in Mumbai. Guided by their hunger, they stumbled upon a spot just outside the station, known then as Pritam Hindu Hotel, where they settled to appease their appetites. Prahlad’s wife was an outspoken person in nature and didn’t shy away from expressing her dissatisfaction with the quality of the food served by the establishment’s owner at that time. Responding to her critique, the owner threw down a challenge, inviting her to showcase her culinary skills and create a dish that would meet his standards. Eagerly, she accepted the challenge and hastened into the kitchen to fulfil this specific task.

During this period, Prahlad Singh Kohli engaged in a conversation with the owner of Pritam Hindu Hotel where he expressed his desire to open a small restaurant. After which the owner proposed the idea of Prahlad Singh Kohli partnering up with him at Pritam Hindu Hotel.

Later on, during the partition his business partner opted to relinquish his ownership share in the eatery to Prahlad Singh Kohli. As a result of this pivotal decision in 1947, the establishment underwent a transformation into a privately owned and family-operated enterprise.

Pritam Restaurant soon became the hub spot for versatile legendary Bollywood icons like Raj Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Ramanand Sagar & many more. Pritam was also a favourite with cricketers like Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev.

With 8 decades of defining Legendary hospitality, Pritam Restaurant has been a landmark and culinary icon since 1942. Brimming with history and heritage, the walls of Pritam could tell a thousand stories. From its frequent interactions with the golden age of Bollywood, to being a place beloved by families, corporates and couples – Pritam has seen it all.
