A city’s birthday deserves a celebration - and Chennai, formerly known as Madras, certainly does! Madras Day, observed on August 22, marks the founding of the city in 1639, when the East India Company acquired a small strip of land where Fort St. George stands today. Over the years, the celebration has grown beyond a single day, embracing the entire month of August with heritage walks, cultural talks, exhibitions, music, contests and of course, food festivals that honour the city’s soul.
An integral part of the celebrations is the showcasing of traditional regional delicacies and lesser-known recipes, offering a culinary journey that takes us back in time.
