- At Anantara Dhigu, Veli and Naladhu 14,455 coral fragments have been added and successfully outplanted
- Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is nurturing an impressive 3,575 coral fragments across its restoration initiatives
Pune, 9th October 2025: Across its resorts in the Maldives, Ventive Hospitality is strengthening vibrant reef ecosystems through science-led stewardship. The reefs surrounding Anantara Dhigu, Anantara Veli, Naladhu Private Island and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island already host thriving coral life that supports diverse marine species. To ensure their long-term health, these natural habitats are being complemented by coral planting, nurseries, and ongoing monitoring programs.
Coral Life at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is surrounded by vibrant reefscapes that support an abundance of corals and marine life. Alongside these natural ecosystems, the resort is driving one of the region’s most active coral restoration programmes to strengthen long-term reef resilience. As a certified PADI Five-Star Dive Resort and Eco Center, Conrad Maldives’ commitment to marine stewardship is deeply rooted in the health and beauty of the surrounding reef, which continues to inspire both its conservation efforts and guest experiences.
The property maintains a minimum of 50 coral frames, each holding between 50 and 60 fragments, amounting to approximately 2,750 coral fragments under active restoration. In addition to this, 400 fragments have already been planted directly onto the reef, and a further 425 are currently growing on 16 mid-water nursery lines. Altogether, the resort is nurturing an impressive 3,575 coral fragments across its restoration initiatives.
Over the past year alone, the team has planted 80 of these fragments in targeted zones of the house reef, with these areas now showing strong signs of growth and regeneration.
The in-house coral nursery provides optimal mid-water conditions for coral development before transplantation. By the fourth quarter of 2025, an additional 40 fragments are expected to be grown and relocated to carefully selected reef areas, further supporting ecological balance and enriching the guest experience.
Thriving Coral Ecosystems at Anantara Dhigu, Veli, and Naladhu
At Anantara Dhigu, Anantara Veli, and Naladhu Private Island, coral ecosystems continue to flourish under the Holistic Approach to Reef Protection (HARP), now in its seventh year. Dhigu’s reef currently supports more than 3,200 coral colonies, while Veli is home to over 1,280, alongside natural regrowth observed at Gulhifushi – Picnic Island.
To reinforce these natural colonies, teams have planted more than 7,916 corals to date, with 6,539 successfully outplanted onto reef areas. Structures such as 78 coral frames and 165 coral ropes ensure favourable conditions for coral growth. Meanwhile, 2,422 colonies have been monitored through more than 200 ecological surveys, amounting to more than 350 hours of dedicated fieldwork. In total, 14,455 coral fragments have been added and successfully outplanted, including those large enough to be returned to the reef.
A Marine Science-Led Model
What makes Anantara’s program distinctive is its integration of marine science into an already rich reef environment. Led by Marine Biologist (PhD), Oriana Migliaccio, the coral nurseries function as living research spaces as well as conservation tools.
During the 2024 bleaching event, her research demonstrated that Montipora digitata (finger coral) and Porites cylindrica (hump coral) showed greater resilience than Acropora species, shaping the strategy for planting across the resorts. Studies have also confirmed that rope-based nurseries improve coral health and survival, leading to their adoption across properties.
Speaking about the heart of her work, Oriana said, “For me, this project is not just a job – it’s a mission from the heart. As we say in Italy, ‘la bellezza salverà il mondo’ – beauty will save the world. And the reef is one of the most beautiful treasures we must protect together.”
Ventive Hospitality’s Vision for Responsible Luxury
Ventive Hospitality believes that ecological responsibility must go hand in hand with world-class hospitality. The reefs surrounding its resorts are living ecosystems that inspire guests with their beauty, while active stewardship ensures they remain resilient for the future.
“At Ventive, we believe that true luxury lies in safeguarding the natural treasures that surround our resorts. By investing in marine science and restoration, we are ensuring that our guests experience both beauty and responsibility; luxury that sustains, rather than depletes,” said Mr. Ranjit Batra, CEO, Ventive Hospitality.
Inviting Guests to Become Coral Guardians
Guests are also encouraged to join in this stewardship journey. At Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, Anantara Dhigu, Anantara Veli, and Naladhu Private Island, visitors can participate in the Adopt a Coral program. By planting coral fragments in nurseries and learning first-hand about reef care, guests actively contribute to the protection of these ecosystems. Each participant receives an e-certificate and regular updates tracking the growth of their adopted coral.
The reefs of the Maldives are both abundant and delicate. By combining natural strength with science-led regeneration and guest engagement, Ventive Hospitality continues to set a benchmark in responsible luxury and environmental stewardship.
