Mumbai, May 20, 2019: The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), South Asia’s largest hospitality company has set a global benchmark for environmental sustainability with 8 of its hotels achieving Platinum Certification and 60 hotels achieving Gold Certification by EarthCheck; the world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification and business advisory group for the tourism and travel industry.
Commenting on the achievement, Dr. PV Murthy, Executive Vice President and Global Head - Human Resources, IHCL said “IHCL has a longstanding history of environmental stewardship through efficient management of all its assets and resources. Since 2008, a total of 78 EarthCheck certified hotels have generated significant savings by conserving water, energy and installing organic waste convertors to reduce waste sent to landfill.
- Conserved 2.38 billion litres of potable water, which is equivalent to 953 standard Olympic-sized swimming pools.
- Minimised waste sent to landfill by recycling 12.1 million litres of waste, which is equivalent to 366 standard 20 feet shipping containers.
- Reduced greenhouse gas emissions including 205,591 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to taking 68,990 cars off the road.
- Saved 1059 million megajoules of energy which is equivalent to the energy consumption of 44,481 houses (typically 4 person households in a developed country).
The hotels that achieved EarthCheck Platinum Certification represent 10 continuous years of measuring and monitoring their social and environmental impact to ensure sustainable tourism management practices. These include Rambagh Palace, Jaipur, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Goa, Taj Lands End, Mumbai, President, Mumbai, Taj MG Road, Bengaluru, Taj West End, Bengaluru, Ambassador, New Delhi and Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Maldives.
