IHCL Reiterates Its Commitment To Safeguard The Environment This Earth Hour

Mumbai, April 13, 2019: The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), South Asia’s largest hospitality company has launched a “Waste to Innovation Challenge” across its 149 hotels in support of Earth Hour. As part of the challenge, the hotels will compete with each other to come up with innovative ideas to convert waste generated within the hotels into valuable products. The most impactful and sustainable initiative will be judged for potential scaling across the company.

Taj MG Road, Bengaluru is amongst the frontrunners in the industry to convert waste oil into usable biodiesel which is being used to power hybrid buses. Furthermore, the byproduct, glycerin, is used to make soaps for the community; thereby enabling providing an integrated approach towards circular economy.

Dr. PV Murthy, Executive Vice-President and Global Head - Human Resources, IHCL said “IHCL has been participating in Earth Hour for many years with great enthusiasm. This year’s initiative aptly reflects our commitment towards environmental stewardship by integrating sustainable practices as part of our daily operations through innovative ideas. We are also proud to announce that within a year, we have eliminated two million plastic straws from our ecosystem since our commitment to the cause.”

Additionally, all IHCL hotels would observe a one hour switch off of electricity from 8:30 to 9.30 pm on 30th March, 2019 coupled with a host of interesting guest and employee engagement activities such as star gazing, story-telling, dinners in the dark and pedal for the planet.
