2019 was the year of Biryani. 95 plates of the aromatic rice dish were ordered every minute, and if that number doesn't fully depict Indians' love for the dish, digest this - 1.6 Biryanis were ordered every second.
Biryani has topped the list of most-ordered dish for the third year in a row.
A StatEATistics report by food-delivery platform Swiggy shows the food ordering habits across the country.
In addition to the much-loved Biryani, other dishes that saw a massive rise in demand included Khichdi and Keto food. The humble Khichdi witnessed a 128 per cent increase in orders this year, indicating the love for comfort food.
It seems like Ketogenic diet took the nation by storm, with a 306 per cent increase in orders for keto food items.
Sweet Treats
When it comes to sweet cravings, Gulab Jamun was the most-ordered dessert across cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai.
17,69,399 Gulab Jamuns and 2,00,301 plates of halwa were ordered on the app.
However, India seems to have found a new sweet favourite this year, with a whopping dishes 11,94,732 of Falooda ordered this year. An ice-cream filled Falooda was ordered over 6000 times in Mumbai. Another favourite, ‘Choco pie and drink’ was ordered 79,242 times in Chandigarh.
Other sweet treats that Indians' indulged in included Death by Chocolate, Tender Coconut ice cream, Tiramisu ice cream and Kesar Halwa.
Overall, the most loved dishes in 2019 were chicken biryani, masala dosa, paneer butter masala, chicken fried rice, mutton biryani, chicken dum biryani, veg fried rice, veg biryani, tandoori chicken and dal makhani, said the report.
With overall orders for healthy options crossing 3.5 lakhs this year, the latest food trend that has taken the nation by storm is the Ketogenic diet which includes meat, fish, poultry and non-starchy vegetables.
Highlighting some unusual requests, the report revealed that customers have used Swiggy Stores to get 'gaumutra' (cow urine) from an ayurvedic store in Gurgaon and rent receipts, among other things.
