Industries minister Vishwajit Rane said a new industrial canteen concept will be introduced to provide healthy and nutritious food in the industrial estates.
“The new concept will be implemented on pilot basis in industrial estates at Pilerne, Verna and Kundaim. In the first year, food will be provided at subsidised rates,” said Rane while interacting with journalists after commissioning of a canteen facility at a nursing institute in Bambolim on Tuesday.
Goa government has entered into a tie-up with Sodexo, a French food service and facilities management company for operating canteen facility at Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim and its other wings. It will be extended to other government-run hospitals, Rane said who also holds the health portfolio.
The hospital canteen was thrown open early last month, an out patient department (OPD) canteen in GMC will be started soon, said GMC dean Dr SM Bandekar
Rane said large companies operating from industrial estates have their canteen facilities for their employees, but employees of small units and factories don’t have the access to nutritious and hygienic food.
He said some members of Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) had told him that Sodexo like companies should operate canteens in industrial estates.
“We are doing an assessment. We want to move step by step and GCCI will be taken into consideration,” he said.
