ITC Ltd has elevated 46-year old Amitav Mukherji as head of corporate human resources, continuing with its trend of appointing younger executives in leadership roles. Mukherji is succeeding R Sridhar who superannuated earlier this month.
An ITC spokesperson confirmed the appointment. A lifer at the cigarette-to-biscuits company, Mukherji is an economics graduate and holds management degrees from XLRI, Jamshedpur, and Cornell University. He has cross-functional experience such as sales and brand management, and was head of HR of the foods business in his last role. He is also actively involved in designing and teaching at learning and development programmes at the corporate level.
Mukherji’s appointment is in line with ITC chairman YC Deveshwar’s plan to appoint younger executives in the top management. Over the past two years, ITC has appointed a number of executives in their late 40s or early 50s in top roles. Analysts said appointment of such younger executives has bought down the average age of top management in ITC to 51-53 from 58-60.
The top management list includes MD Sanjiv Puri, director B Sumant, head of the packaged food business Hemant Malik and Sameer Satpathy as the chief executive of personal care business. Other examples include lifestyle retail business head Vikas Gupta, Sandeep Sule as head of trade marketing and distribution and Ravi Rayavaram the chief executive of safety matches and agarbatti business.
