The presence of Julie Goodwin, MasterChef Australia’s season one winner, as a Favourite in the series’ latest season was an exceptional twist to the closely watched culinary show. Her entry into the MasterChef kitchen, 13 years after she lifted the trophy to compete once again, was revered by others as a legend readying to show the walk of the trade. However, Julie Goodwin seemed to be on a different path when she timidly confessed to feeling intimidated and challenged by the young league of Fans and Favourites at the very beginning. After a dicey and nervous start in episode one, Julie Goodwin proved in the latest episode of MasterChef Australia: Fans & Favourites why her signature home-style cooking can still beat the jazzy new-age dishes belted by the other contenders. Facing the food pyramid challenge alongside Melannie Presson and Jenn Lee of the Fans team, she explained how she felt like a “Nanny and the grandkids” on her bench. She decided to cook a simple cauliflower soup served with pumpkin and sage. Halfway through the challenge, she displayed on-the-feet thinking by splitting cream to create butter and adding speck, pickled or smoked pork belly, to her dish at the last minute. Judges graded her dish as gutsy given the simplicity of the dish as they experienced her heart-warming cooking that soothes one’s soul. Judge Jock Zonfrillo even claimed her humble soup to be “one of the best cauliflower soups he’s ever eaten.” This accolade received by Julie Goodwin’s shaky nerves awarded her the much-needed confidence boost that is sure to establish her as a classic that can never go out of trend due to its honest cooking.
