City hotels are all geared up for the first major sporting event since the lifting of the alcohol ban. They are ready with special offers at their restaurants and pubs for the Fifa World Cup that is scheduled to begin this week.

"Last World Cup, we were not able to serve alcohol. This year, there has been a lot of inquiries about the World Cup. People would love to watch it in a nice and exciting setting," said Kiran P Koshy, general manager, Hotel Presidency.

He said they have arranged big screens for the game and have prepared a special list of cocktails for the screening, with a selection of new dishes from the countries that are taking part in the World Cup.

Radisson Blu is spicing up the spirit of the competition with large seating gallery.

"The areas will be marked into two separate zones so that people cheering for their team can sit together. This will recreate vibes as that of inside the stadium but within the comforts of our facility. We have also set up special drinks and snacks for Rs 999, which includes unlimited snacks," said Rejee Xavier, food and beverages manager at Radisson Blu.

Few hotels have also said that they would not be screening after 11 pm as per the excise rules but are glad that most matches are in afternoon and evening.

"The best part of the world cup this year is that the people find the timing convenient. The first match on most days are around 5.30pm and by then most people would be done with work and free to enjoy their evening. We will not be airing the match after 11 pm because as per rules of the excise department, all bars should be closed by then," said Koshy.

Crowne Plaza, Kochi, has also prepared multiple foods and beverages packages for the fans. "There would be an LED screen to watch the match. The decor would be embellished with flags of participating countries and football accessories. After 11 pm, beverages would not be served but the facility will be open for viewing the matches," said Donna Vincent, assistant manager, Crowne Plaza.

Meanwhile, hotel managers have also said that there have been inquiries regarding the availability of rooms during big matches. "During big events, several guests would prefer booking a room and spend the evening with their family and friends. They can have a couple of drinks which they will bring, can access the room service and have the privacy of their hotel room," said George Laji, general manager, Yuvarani Residency.
