Bharuch, at the mouth of the river Narmada in Gujarat in western India, has been settled since the times of antiquity and was called Bharukaccha. It was a ship-building centre and seaport in the pre-compass coastal trading routes to perhaps as far back as the days of the pharaohs. Many goods from the Far East (the famed Spice and Silk trade) were shipped here making it a terminus for several key land-sea trade routes. Bharuch was known to the Greeks, the various Persian Empires, the Roman Republic and Empire, and other Western centres of civilisation through the end of the European Middle Ages.

Traditionally, Bharuch has been the centre of the peanut processing and marketing industry. At present, this heavily industrialised area is renowned for its textile mills, chemical plants, long-staple cotton, dairy products and more. Gujarat's biggest liquid cargo terminal is situated here. It also houses many reputed multinational companies including Videocon, BASF, Reliance, Welspun Stahl, etc. Besides being a centre for business, there are several temples, ashrams and a 1,000-year-old fort which attract tourists. The Bhrigu Rishi Temple, one of the famous and sacred temples of Gujarat, is on the banks of the Narmada. The Nav Nathas or nine Shivalingas are located at different places in old Bharuch city. Dashashwamedh Ghat, on the banks of the Narmada, is the place where King Mahabali performed ten Ashwamedha sacrifices.
