National, March 2026 - The Japan Tourism Agency (MLIT) has released preliminary figures for 2025 inbound tourism consumption, displaying India’s remarkable growth as a source market. In 2025, Germany ranked 1st globally as the fastest-growing market for tourism and leisure spending in Japan. India grew at 4.2% year-on-year (YoY), securing the 4th position worldwide. Within South & Southeast Asia, India recorded 3rd fastest growth, after Singapore (11.1%) and Malaysia (6.6%).

Building on India’s strong growth momentum, total travel consumption by Indian visitors to Japan reached an estimated 78.4 billion yen in 2025. The impressive YoY growth rate of 39.6% firmly positions India among the fastest-rising contributors. This surge reflects a sharp increase of 22.2 billion yen from 2024, when Indian spending stood at 56.2 billion yen.

Following this trend, Indian travellers demonstrated higher-than-average spending patterns, with per-person expenditure averaging 276,718 yen – significantly above the overall foreign visitor average of 224,806 yen in Tourism & Leisure purpose category. Spending was concentrated in accommodation (43.8%), food and beverage (18.7%), and shopping (17.7%) followed by others.

The increase in Indian arrivals is attributed to improved air connectivity, growing economy and Indian travellers’ interest in Japan’s cultural, tradition, and natural attractions. The rise in total spending by Indian visitors was supported by a sharp increase in arrivals to Japan in 2025, reaching 315,100—up by 35.2% from

233,061 in 2024. The surge in Indian tourist spending and arrivals underscores India’s growing importance in Japan’s inbound tourism landscape. With increasing awareness of Japan’s year-round attractions—from cherry blossoms to autumn foliage and powder snow—Indian travelers are shaping Japan into a preferred all- season destination.
