Mei 13 is Now Open

11/03/2020

Mei 13, the modern Cantonese restaurant by Gauri Devidayal and Jay Yousuf, is now open. The restaurant replaces the South East Asian restaurant, Miss T.

Guests who visit the restaurant, nestled in a leafy bylane in Colaba, will be greeted by a bright red lacquered door, and the restaurant’s name in Chinese characters, emblazoned across the second floor of the bungalow in which it is housed. Designed by ZZ Architects, Mei 13 features a skylight-filled reception with cozy booths that can also serve as a waiting area. Soft, neutral shades seen in the tabletops and flooring are accentuated by blue and green jewel-toned velvet banquettes and bar seats, through the room. Inside the dining room and lounge on the ground level, the focal point is the striking, T-shaped, community bar customized in crystallized quartz along with natural overlay lighting. The upstairs is ideal for larger groups, and also features a private dining area which seats up to 18 guests.

The restaurant boasts a trio of international chefs, each bringing a unique expertise to the menu, that is filled with a variety of comforting dishes with classic flavours. Executive Brand Chef Kent Lee, who was formerly with the Hakkasan group, both globally and in Mumbai, oversees the restaurant and is joined by dim sum master Chef Michael Pien, and wok master Chef Xavier Tan.

The menu offers a range of appetizers such as Macadamia & Cashew Nuts with Spicy Butter; Eggplant Fries with a Jian Jiang sauce that is guaranteed to get you addicted; Duck Salad and Avocado Salad for the more calorie consciousand Almond Garlic Soft Shell Crab made with local crabs.  A variety of steamed and fried Dim sum like Moli Cakes with Crispy Garlic & Black Bean; and Fresh Crab Claws with Kataifi (vermicelli-like pastry) is followed by a choice of some classic soups. Next, diners can enjoy main courses like Mock Duck in Black Pepper Sauce; Luffa Melon with Fermented Chili in Claypot; Mei 13 Prawn Curry with Steamed Buns; and a Deep Sea Butter Lobster that’s quickly become a crowd favourite.

A selection of vegetable-based dishes like Sautéed Snowpeas with Truffle Oil; and Wok-Tossed French Beans with Olives, accompanied by noodle and rice dishes like Yangzhou Chow Fan Fried Rice with BBQ Pork and Prawns; and Stir-Fried Hand-Pulled Noodles with King Soya Sauce, can also be ordered for the table. Traditional desserts like Mo Mo Cha Cha (coconut milk porridge with tapioca and sweet potato); and Mango Pudding with Cream will end the meal on a sweet note along with some of the favourites from Miss T’s dessert menu including the Yuzu Tart and Tender Coconut Panacotta.

The wide variety of vegetable-based dishes available will appeal to the vegetarian diner, and all guests will appreciate the familiar, comforting flavours of dishes presented in a contemporary manner. All sauces are house-made, and local, seasonal ingredients have been extensively used. The dishes are balanced, authentic, and fresh, and are best enjoyed shared.

A series of hand-crafted cocktails delightfully balance the umami-rich flavor profiles and feature fresh fruit, house-made aromatics and bitters, and infusions that add further depth to each drink.
