Founded by couple Varun and AshniSheth in 2018, NOTO secured Rs 4 crore in pre-Series A round in August this year. The round saw participation from Bollywood actor John Abraham, Titan Capital, Rockstud Capital, and WEH Ventures, besides some angel investors.According to the company, it will invest the newly-raised funds for geographical expansion, product development and hiring talent. The launch of the vegan ice cream range is one of the biggest developments in the company since the funding.

Speaking to the co-founder Ashni said, “We’re thrilled about our next-level low calorie ice-creams to the vegan and dairy-free market. This is our first launch in plant-based indulgence and we can’t wait to share with NOTO ice cream fans. Who’s behind NOTO?

You can blame husband-wife duo Ashni and Varun Sheth for your daily dose of NOTO. Armed with a degree in Culinary Arts from New York, Varun is the man behind Pizza Kitchen and Gourmet Catering by 1Tablespoon. Ashni, on the other hand, a communications major from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai and design alumni from Istituto Marangoni, Milan, is the Marketing and Communications head of 1 Tablespoon – bringing creative flair to NOTO.

How did the idea come about?

NOTO was born with the aim to revolutionise the way people consume ice creams and sweets. “This generation is exceedingly mindful of what’s on their plate. Diets are no longer a fad but away of life. People want to eat right to feel good. We give them just that with our low-calorie ice cream range,” explains Ashni. However, NOTO was born as the result of a personal incident. A health scare in 2018 led Varun to get serious about fitness. He came face-to-face with the battle of curbing his sweet cravings in a bid to manage his weight. “It got me thinking — life’s real joy is in that extra scoop to celebrate your friend’s promotion, a cupcake too many on your birthday, or more than a generous helping of cake just because. We shouldn’t have to give up on that,” says Varun.

What’s in store?

After selling over 3.5 lakh units since inception and serving a delightful scoop of low-calorie ice creams to approximate 25,000 customers,Ashni and Varun Sheth have taken NOTO’s low-calorie ice creams and Pops to cities like Delhi and Bengaluru. The plan is to also expand the healthy ice cream vertical, give customers new fun flavours in different formats and also to cater to specific dietary requirements such as vegan, keto, high protein with this new collection. “When people want ice cream – healthy or otherwise, NOTO will have it all, a one stop solution. All of this while staying true to what we believe; being transparent and not compromising on taste. Being available pan-India is the next big thing we would like to work on – while this will be challenging, we feel confident it’s the right approach. We’ve been getting a lot of inbound inquiries and interest from other cities and we’re quite excited to venture outside Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru ” says Ashni.
