Now, order jail delicacies online

The high-quality, low-priced dishes prepared by jail inmates will be available at your door steps now. An online food aggregator has started delivery of the food products prepared at Central Prison and Correctional Home, Poojapura, to customers from Thursday.

It was after the proposal of director general of prisons and correctional services Rishi Raj Singh to supply the food prepared in Central Jail through app-based food aggregators that the prisons department reached a deal with the group. He inaugurated the facility on Thursday.

Twelve varieties of food combos are offered through the online food delivery application starting from Rs 50 to Rs 155. Biriyani, tapioca, puttu, various chicken dishes, wheat parotta, etc. are available online.

Singh said that times were changing as 30% of the hotel food was now served at homes through food aggregators and the Central Prison, which prepares a large quantity of food, had followed the new trend.

“Around one lakh chappatis are prepared in jails. There are eight outlets in the district, including mobile vehicles, which sell jail food. ‘Food for Freedom’ will provide food at reasonable rates to people. It is understood that the demand is more than the food prepared here. Ensure that food is available for delivery when an order is received,” said Singh.

Considering the increasing demand for food and the workload for inmates at the cafeteria, Central Prison will deploy an additional 20 staff to prepare and pack food.

Singh also asked the representatives of the company to collect the identity card issued by the excise department for their staff who deliver food.

“Kerala prison is known for its many path-breaking initiatives for its inmates. We found this to be an empowering initiative and are proud to announce our exclusive association with Kerala Prison’s restaurant on our app in Thiruvananthapuram. We are glad that we can enable such initiatives to embrace technology and innovation for the betterment of lives,” said Bhavik Rathod, Head of Uber Eats India and South Asia, in a statement.
