O’Greens’: Launching India’s first of its kind vegan Protein bar this Christmas

November 2020: If you run a Google Search for "Vegan Protein/Nutrition Bars in India", what shows up is an assortment of nutrition bars and protein bars, but almost none that are vegan. Imagine the plight of vegans across the country who struggle to explain their choices everyday. For a country that might be perceived as one with the most vegetarians than anywhere in the world, few people in our dairy loving nation truly grasp the meaning of veganism. O'Greens, a food tech startup is on a mission to create the most nutritionally and spiritually powerful health food on the planet and come Christmas, they’re going to be introducing India’s first of its kind vegan protein bar. Simplifying vegan living, one bar at a time. 

It's funny how evolution has led us to find ways to simplify the simplest lifestyle. From time immemorial, humans have strived to live in harmony with Mother Nature. We knew what was in the food and drink we consumed, because we grew it, foraged it, cultivated it with our own bare hands. We enjoyed not just a more nutritious and healthy connection to our food, but a spiritual one. As we evolved, technology advanced, humans drifted further away from their primal lifestyle.

"One summer, on a trek to Grahan Valley in the Himalayan mountains, I began to crave something healthy, vegan, without sugar, but still delicious. Like anyone, I rummaged through the  internet, searching for a product that would tick all those boxes and came up empty handed. And that's the day I decided to take matters into my own hands and the O'Greens seed was planted. 18 months of R & D later, we had a set of artisanal health bars that were 100% vegan, naturally sweetened, gluten-free and most importantly, absolutely delicious!", says Harshvardhan Agarwal, Founder and CEO of O'Greens. Speaking about their newest product which they will be introducing around christmas, he said, “We’re launching India’s first of its kind protein bar this Christmas for people to enjoy the holidays without any guilt. We are very excited. We’re introducing a different palate of flavours from what we currently have. It is going to be India’s healthiest & cleanest source of protein.”

Launching a startup is a lot of work. With seven employees and a solar energy powered unit, O'Greens introduced these dairy-free, gluten free, naturally sweetened health bars in Pistachio Moringa, Coffee Berry and Choco-Orange flavours alongside scrumptious round the clock snack options of Bliss Balls in cashew cinnamon, coconut date and hazelnut cacao flavours. Less than a month after their launch, the COVID-19 lockdown came into place. For a startup at its nascent stage, this should've come as a blow, but seeing this as an opportunity, O’ Greens took to social media to educate people about veganism and its benefits via chats with plant-based nutritionists and doctors.

While Covid-19 did put a pause on a lot of business plans, it also brought a lot of people to realise the benefits for veganism and pushed the agenda among people who don’t wish to see another disease outbreak from live-animal markets or crowded farms and slaughterhouses. With the vegan movement gaining momentum in the country and the world over, O'Greens aims to plant 1 million trees by 2025 and reduce their carbon footprint and become carbon neutral. For every box they sell, they plant a tree.
