On September 6, India celebrated the fifth anniversary of the repeal of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, the Imperial-era rule that made consensual same-sex intercourse "unnatural" and "illegal". The win was long deserved, and it came after a decades-long battle in which voices from the LGBTQ community and others banded together to remove the cruel law.
This year, though, September is a month of joy and celebration for India's queer population. It marks 6 years since an oppressive law was repealed. Several institutions have organised activities honouring the LGBTQIA+ community to commemorate the day.
The LaLiT Ashok Bangalore and The Keshav Suri Foundation will commemorate September 9 as Queer Freedom Day - " QUEERDOM" to honour the 5th anniversary featuring Legendary Karma, Dark Fantasy , Beyonce the Drag Queen, Drag King Bloody Kamina, Performing Boys- Royce, Abby, John,Andre and DJ Rahul.
At Lalit, we believe in #PureLove—a love that knows no boundaries. Join us on this sparkling journey as we spread love, acceptance, and pure joy throughout the LGBTQIA+ community and beyond.
The community has planned a week-long celebration, concluding with a party at Kitty Ko, the inclusive pub and bar at the LaLit Ashok Bangalore that is well-known for hosting diversity and LGBTQIA+ events.
Keshav Suri, the Executive Director of the Lalit group, was one of the petitioners who challenged Section 377 which makes this party all the more meaningful.
If you want to immerse yourself in the rainbow of festivities while engaging in some serious talks about queer rights and inclusive practices, this is the place to be.
