A unique initiative has been taken by McDonald in which they have started recycling tons and tons of used cooking oil from its restaurant into biodiesel fuel which will be used in the company’s refrigerated trucks. HRPL (master franchisee which operates McDonald branded restaurant in the west and south India) is the first restaurant chain which is recycling its used cooking oil as biodiesel to run its trucks. This unique pilot project to reduce carbon footprint was started last year which now covers 85 McDonald outlets in Mumbai and will eventually cover 275 plus branches in west and south region of India. According to HRPL now process 35000 litres of used cooking oil into biodiesel every month which help them save 420,000 litres of crude oil yearly. This diesel which is made from used cooking oil is much cleaner with 75 percent lower carbon emission over its entire lifecycle which will help reduce global warming. This biodiesel is also used in other refrigeration equipment.

Conversion of cooking oil into biodiesel requires a certain process. First, the oil used in the restaurant for frying French fries and other food is collected in tankers and sent it to converting facility where it gets converted into biodiesel and returned for the use in supply logistic of McDonald group for the use.

In the next four years, HRPL is planning to expand its restaurant network to 450-500. This will increase the quantity of used cooking oil to 15 lakh litres which will be used to make biodiesel for running the trucks fleets which will drastically reduce 4000MT of carbon emission which is equivalent to planting 200,000 trees
