The MasterChef kitchen opened to a tense tart pressure test on Tuesday night, a day after Christina Batista, Matt landmark, Tommy Pham and Daniel Lamble failed the alphabet mystery box challenge. Presenting his incredible smoked pecan and butterscotch tart, renowned pastry chef Garreth Whitton left the contestants in a marvel with the flavours and incredible textures of the dish.
Failing to recreate the dessert, Portuguese chef Christina Batista became the fifth constant to leave the prestigious MasterChef Australia: Fans Vs Favourites. The last to put her tart in the oven, Christina knew she would be cutting it fine to bake it perfectly, but all she could do was wait. Having pushed through quite a rough cook, Christina admitted that when the judges revealed the top two tarts of the day belonged to Fans Daniel and Matt, she wasn't surprised at all by the news that she would be leaving the kitchen.
"Seeing the other boys' tarts, I noticed mine had sunk in the middle a little bit... once I heard Matt and Dan had done a good job, I don't know, I just had this gut-feeling that it was going to be me,” said Christina.
Gutted to be leaving, Christina said she is happy to have returned and that she had a great time and made lifelong friends and despite the low moments, the highs have been incredible.
Regretting that she didn’t get to show more of her Portuguese culture, Christina said, “I definitely wanted to show more Portuguese food, that was my biggest regret, that I didn't get to do more of my food.”
Christina was one of the top 5 finalists in season 5 of the show. Following her stint in the kitchen in 2013, shewent on to complete work experience at the prestigious Quay restaurant before starting her own market stall at farmers' markets and running a successful catering business.
