MUMBAI, JANUARY 08, 2024: The Art Gallery at The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai – the iconic flagship hotel of Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) will participate in the prestigious Mumbai Gallery Weekend with a special showcase of key pieces from its permanent collection. Titled “A Room With A View” –curated by Mortimer Chatterjee and will showcase masterpieces by luminaries Ajay De, Nayanaa Kanodia, Ram Kumar, Murli Lahoti, Jehangir Sabavala and Madhav Satwalekar.

Starting with it’s opening at 5:00pm on Thursday, January 11 2024, the exhibition will run through the weekend and be open to welcoming art enthusiasts, residents and guests from 10:00am -8:00pm daily. Located on the first floor of the Palace, the Art Gallery has been a city-icon since it opened its doors in the 60’s and then again in 2016. Masters such as Laxman Shreshtha, Jehangir Sabavala, MF Husain, amongst others, began their illustrious journeys in the art world from this space.

The art collection at The Taj can be largely attributed to the tasteful acquisitions made by Elizabeth Kerkar and Rodabeh Sawhney in the 1960s and 1970s - a period where abstract art truly found its footing. Taj strives to be the platform where the cultural experiences of the past, present and future, coexist in harmony and showcase the true grit of the Indian heritage.

“For over six decades, The Taj Mahal Palace's Art Gallery has remained the nucleus of Mumbai's art scene. As the hotel celebrates its remarkable 120-year milestone, we take immense pride in showcasing our timeless treasures to the discerning audience attending the Mumbai Gallery Weekend. Looking forward, our commitment extends beyond this event, aiming for a series of art-focused programs. Throughout its illustrious history, spanning over a century, The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai has fostered an enduring relationship with art. The hotel boasts a repository housing 4,000 remarkable artworks, a testament to our ongoing dedication to preserving, promoting, and supporting Indian art and culture.”

Ritesh Sharma, General Manager – The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai

“I am excited to curate an exhibition with works drawn from the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel’s remarkable art collection. ‘A Room with a View’ presents paintings by artists who, through their works, enact the role of traveller. This seems a particularly apt context for the Taj, a storied space marinated in the world of travel and in creating a home away from home.”

Mortimer Chatterjee, Curator – The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai
