After the dejection of the first elimination round of the season, contestants of MasterChef Australia, season 14 geared up for an exciting day of facing the first Mystery Box challenge of the season. Titled Throwback Mystery Box Challenge, episode 6 saw Julie Goodwin in Deja vu as the Mystery Box unveiled was the same as the first Mystery Box from season 1. With a mix of pork chops, Granny Smith apples, dark chocolate, tomatoes, flat-leaf parsley, ciabatta bread, lemon and cabbage, the box instantly sparked ideas into the heads of contestants, who set themselves for a 75 minutes challenge. The kitchen was abuzz with creativity and talent at its peak as contestants juggled between ingredients to create a mix of simple and complex delicacies.
Kitchen legend Julie Goodwin, who faced the same mystery box in season 1, unfortunately, couldn't stand out with her tomato and pork pasta as her pasta was too thin with missing elements of flavour.Meanwhile, Billie McKay, who loved Mystery Box challenges in season 7, was thrilled to explore a new challenge. The Judges called her rich chocolate and lemon ice cream sandwich a luxury and were very impressed by her culinary techniques.
Amongst the Favourites, Aldo Ortado’s Pork Cotoletta Milanese won him an express pass to Thursday’s immunity challenge for his juicy, well-cooked piece of pork with a layer of golden crisp on the skin. The Judges also gave him a 10/10 all day long praise. From the Fans team, Melanie Persson, won an express pass to Thursday’s immunity challenge for her mind-blowing gluten-free lemon meringue choux. The crispy delicious pastry made of cabbage was perfectly executed making it light and tasty. Judge Jock Zonfrillo admitted that he was disappointed not to have more than one on his plate. “I had pretty high expectations on that choux attempt and I got to say we have never been more disappointed, not to have more than one choux,” said Jock.
In the next episode, the bottom four contestants will face the dreaded pressure test. To find out more, stay tuned as we bring to you key highlights of the latest episodes.
