Magellan Discoverer

25th February 2026: Antarctica21 has announced the launch of Magellan Discoverer, the first hybrid-electric expedition cruise ship built in the Americas. The vessel will enter service for the 2026–27 Antarctic season, with bookings now open through early 2028.

Built in Chile and designed specifically for Antarctica21’s air-cruise operations, Magellan Discoverer represents the next stage in the company’s small-ship evolution. At 94 metres in length, the vessel will accommodate 76 guests across three passenger decks, supported by 67 crew members, maintaining the high crew-to-guest ratio that defines the Antarctica21 experience.

The ship is equipped with a hybrid-electric propulsion system combining marine batteries with IMO (International Maritime Organisation) Tier III-compliant engines1, reducing CO₂ emissions and underwater noise while improving overall energy efficiency. Onboard systems recycle engine heat for heating purposes and recover operational energy, supporting lower-impact expedition cruising in one of the world’s most sensitive environments. Built to Polar Class 6 specifications1, the vessel is designed for safe and responsible navigation in Antarctic waters.

Magellan Discoverer features 40 cabins, including Grand Veranda Suites, Family Suites, Deluxe Veranda Cabins and Single Veranda Cabins. All cabins include private balconies, offering strong appeal for Indian FITs, families and solo travellers seeking privacy and comfort in remote regions. Public spaces include an observation lounge, gym, sauna and dining areas designed by Tomas Tillberg Design, reflecting a contemporary style inspired by Patagonia and Antarctica.

The addition of Magellan Discoverer expands Antarctica21’s fleet alongside Magellan Explorer, strengthening capacity for its signature air-cruise expeditions. Travellers fly from Punta Arenas directly to King George Island, bypassing the Drake Passage and maximising time on the continent, a format that has gained increasing traction among Indian travellers prioritising efficiency and comfort on long-haul journeys.

Commenting on the launch, Juan Cristóbal Del Pedregal Bravo, Senior Commercial Director, Antarctica21, said: “Magellan Discoverer reflects our long-standing focus on small-scale, responsible Antarctic travel. The hybrid-electric technology supports our environmental commitments, while the boutique size ensures the flexibility and personalised experience our guests expect. With bookings now open for the 2026–27 season, we look forward to working closely with our partners in India as interest in expedition travel continues to grow.”

Antarctica21 remains CarbonNeutral® certified and continues to invest in initiatives such as renewable energy integration at its Explorers House in Punta Arenas and the testing of synthetic e-Fuels for Zodiac operations. The launch of Magellan Discoverer further reinforces the company’s commitment to combining innovation with low-impact exploration in Antarctica.
