As we celebrate World Tourism Day 2025, it is vital to reflect on how government-led initiatives can position tourism as a strategic driver of the economy. Mrs. Jyoti Mayal, Chairperson of THSC and former President of TAAI, highlights five key areas where policy interventions can redefine India’s global travel identity

 1. Strengthening Infrastructure Beyond Metros

Investment by the government in airports, rail, and road networks in Tier II and Tier III cities is essential. Tourism cannot be metro-focused; regional centers need to be made strong so that they can become gateways of cultural and economic exchange.

 2. Policy Push for Women and Traveller Safety

Safety continues to be the foundation of a successful tourism sector. Measures that guarantee dedicated helplines, traveller tracking mechanisms, and women-safety programmes will inspire more women and solo travellers to visit India with optimism.

 3. Skilling as a National Priority

India's tourism industry personnel need to have international-standard competences. Policy-based skilling initiatives among travel agents, guides, and hospitality personnel can guarantee not only jobs, but quality that instills confidence with foreign tourists.

 4. Public–Private Partnerships as Growth Accelerators

The government’s vision must include collaboration with industry bodies, associations, and private stakeholders. Together, we can create scalable tourism models that balance growth with sustainability.

 5. Sustainability as Core Policy

Policies focusing on green mobility, eco-tourism zones, and responsible tourism practices will ensure that growth today does not compromise resources for tomorrow.

 Leadership Note:

As industry and government align on these priorities, India has the potential to emerge not just as a travel destination but as a global tourism leader. Tourism policy must be viewed as a nation-building tool empowering communities, uplifting women, and building bridges across cultures.
