About Sowmya Rao Vijaymohan, Founder and Director at Tres

Sowmya’s formative years were spent on tennis courts in a multitude of cities across India, playing the sport at a National level, along with her younger siblings. In retrospect, she suspects this is the reason for her passion for travel. Outside of the hectic tennis itinerary, travel back in the day involved loading up the family Ambassador car and driving across North East India where she grew up or exploring the various temple trails across South India in the culturally rich region surrounding her ancestral home in South Kanara during the annual school break.

While studying literature from Lady Sri Ram College, followed by Post Graduation in communication from Indian Institute of Mass Communication she continued to travel, exploring countries by taking up short term assignments with the International Tennis Federation as a White Badge Umpire for tennis tournaments.

Sowmya went on to pursue a career in advertising with Rediffusion DY&R followed by a stint in Good Relations before she decided to bid adieu to her corporate life, to pursue her true calling that rested firmly in her passion for travel.

In 2006, following a vision to lead a life driven by meaningful travel and mindful experiences, Sowmya along with her partner conceptualised and built RARE – a marketing and representation company for small and off-beat boutique hotels across India. Over the past decade, Sowmya has played a key role in directing attention towards oft-ignored owner driven hotels, and lesser celebrated destinations, ensuring a secure position for a number of them on the Indian tourism circuit.

In 2019, Sowmya decided to move on from RARE to focus on realising her vision of a global-standard inclusive event platform dedicated towards showcasing the Indian subcontinent as a destination for leisure, luxury and inspirational travel that is unique, magnificent and transformational in its offering. Driven by an ideology that has a firm foundation in timeless design, exceptional hospitality, authenticity and sustainability, Très in its third edition presents 50 exceptional boutique hotels and travel concepts from the subcontinent to a strictly-screened, by-invitation-only audience that comprises over 50 of the most powerful international and 90 regional travel experts. The two day Tres itinerary involves an intensive session of one-on-one meetings between the primaries, juxtaposed with a series of knowledge sessions, experiential workshops, and fireside chats, alongside personal interactions with some of the finest minds that have nurtured the Indian travel landscape.

Sowmya is a Gurgaon based traveller, a dreamer, a tennis player besides being a hands-on-mom. A self-confessed camera phone junkie, she loves the convenience of capturing any image that catches her fancy. She is currently exploring her food passion and while travelling is often seen hunkering around the local kitchens and markets for recipes and stories.
