Most urban Indians love to eat hotel food without leaving their homes, according to a recent study. They prefer ordering food and breaking the monotonous routines of cooking food at home.
Food delivery network Uber Eats' latest Food Moods of India report seeks to answer what's driving India's growing culture of eating out-of-home food.
The report looks at how delivery equals dine-out and take-away put together. Out-of-home food is mostly consumed at home as ordering in via delivery (48%) is almost equal to dine-out (34%) and take-away (18%) put together.
Further, a majority (76%) of survey respondents ordering food get it delivered to their home while 13% to other locations such as work/college and 5% to friend’s home.
Consuming out of home food often has also made users experiment less with restaurants, the study finds as 82% of consumers stick to a maximum of five restaurants in their repertoire.
Further, users also factor in the economics while ordering in. 43% of the respondents say ordering food is a more economical choice than hiring a cook which can be both expensive and tedious.
Among cuisines, north Indian food and biryani have emerged as a big hit among adults while desi Chinese and pizzas are the picks of kids.
"With people eating non-home cooked food at least once a week, consumers are increasingly outsourcing their food decisions to technology-enabled life managers like us," Bansi Kotecha, head of operations, India and SA Uber Eats, said.
The survey was conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Uber Eats in 13 cities across India among 4,000 consumers.
