Uttarakhand: Iconic Lakshman Jhula Bridge is closed temporarily

An iconic landmark “Lakshman Jhula”, which is in the Yoga Capital of the World Rishikesh, is temporarily closed for all kind of vehicles. It means all the vehicular movement has been stopped through it. Lakshman Jhula is more than 90 years old bridge and very much popular worldwide.

It is a suspension bridge, which is 450 feet long and flows over the holy river Ganga. It is the ‘First Jeepable Bridge of Uttar Pradesh’, and its construction was started in the year 1927.

Now, a ban on all vehicular movement has been put by the Uttarkhand’s state government, after a Public Works Department (PWD) report stated the distressed condition of the whole bridge. The immediate closure of the bridge and ban on all vehicular movements has been announced. It is the most famous tourist too in the town. Only pedestrians are allowed to use the bridge, but in a limited number at the time.

Uttarakhand’s chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said, “A new bridge would soon be built as a proper alternative to the iconic Lakshman Jhula, and help in bearing the traffic adequately. The first suspension bridge of Uttarakhand is now in need of immediate renovation”.
