Hospitality Lexis had a conversation with the Executive Housekeeper Abhishek Chaturvedi about the housekeeping services in Aloft Bengaluru Cessna Business Park

Hospitality Lexis / Print Edition December 2019

Housekeeping department plays a very vital role in any hotel operations. Team training has to be top-notch and they need to understand the fact that Housekeeping is also called Magic service. As per modern concept and processes, we have set some specific time frames for guest room cleaning as per the guest movements inside the hotel. During that specific time frame, assigned work has to be completed with top-notch quality. Basic training plays a crucial role in this like ‘how to enter in guest rooms’ and ‘how to deep clean guest rooms’.  Housekeeping mid-management members training is also important under which they have to be trained for guest rooms inspection in a certain time frame without disturbing guests when they are back from their offices/work. Housekeeping and Engineering work together in every hotel so that alignment in operation remains the same. Our main motto is to create wonderful experiences for all of our guest where it is a necessity to work together as a team.

Communication is the key to coordinate better between departments with higher efficiency and without disturbing or invading the privacy of guests. Housekeepers have to be very sharp to check any of the maintenance defects inside a room or amenity replenishment or minibar replenishment. All these tasks have to be finished together in one go once we get any room to clean.

Sustainability is indeed the need of the hour as our entire future is dependent on it. We have certain programs in place here at Aloft Cessna like ‘Change It Up’ in the form of collateral which allows guests to choose whether they want to change linen during their stay or not. We also have a great program called ‘Make a Green Choice’ in our hotel which rewards guests if they are opting not to change linen in guest rooms. Our hotel also has a water treatment plant and a sewage treatment plant which allows water reuse in garden areas or basement washing work.

Housekeepers have a responsibility of maintaining the upkeep of the hotel for which hard work is the only key. Everyone wants to see smiling faces every morning. I come early in the morning with my team at 7:30 AM, personally meet them in the morning briefing and share a pleasantry or two with them for all the hard work which they have done. Everyone likes to be recognized for their hard work and we often share success stories with each other during this time. Each and every team member is empowered in our hotel so that they create extraordinary memories for our guests without having a second thought if they need permission to do something special.

We have also implemented some simple initiatives with the team like a quick yoga session in morning briefings and a health tip of the day which keeps them aware of best health practices. We also make it a point to have healthy food in our cafeteria which only helps in an employee’s day to day functioning.
