Story1: Love has no age but it does traverse through time, through every curve ball life throws and our first story is of a cute Parsi couple who fell in love with each other at the wee ages of 9 and 12 respectively.

Dinoo, at 9, was a sprightly young thing and Rustom at 12 was already a serious young man. They both were very different individuals, fate had plans to bring them together and soon! So, it happened that Dinoo came to live in the same Parsi colony as Rustom. Like all children in the same vicinity, they were playmates. But Rustom had eyes only for Dinoo. Soon their friendship blossomed to having a ‘crush’ on each other. Little things like notes, a flower or chocolate were passed around, shared and cherished. Rustom confessed his love to Dinoo too. And Dinoo responded with a giggle (which was a yes!). However, this was 1950 and things were way different, and they were only kids. Having gotten a yes from his lady love, Rustom wanted to seal the deal. So, on a fine Sunday morning, he dialled Dinoo’s landline number. After a couple of rings, Dinoo’s father picked up. Hearing his voice, Rustom froze but after a couple of attempts, he managed to blurt out that he was Rustom and he wanted to marry Dinoo!

The man at the other end was clearly shocked but said okay, you have my blessings but you need to grow up first! Well, the rest is history. They grew up, got married and now, many many years later, they are still in love!

Story 2: Now here is a story of chances and coincidences and love in times of Amitabh Bachchan crushes. Reena had a huge crush on Amitabh Bachchan – the angry young man, tall, dark and obviously handsome! While she daydreamed about him at work, in walked a clone of Big B himself! Sudhir was tall, had a head full of dark hair and conventional good looks too. Every girl in the office had a crush on him. Reena really liked how he dressed – crisp white shirts, always well-groomed and he was charming. Unbeknownst to Reena, Sudhir had noticed her as well. However, with their hectic work schedules, they never really got to know each other. Once Reena was travelling to work via the local train and bumped into Sudhir. They smiled, said hello and the man dozed off! Again, no conversation.

But gradually love blossomed and he asked her out. Since the very first date, there was no looking back for them. They were the quintessential Amitabh-Jaya ki jodi in real life. But here is where the real plot twist comes into play. She belonged to the Jain community and he was a non-vegetarian Bengali, i.e., they were poles apart! So while they knew they wanted to marry each other, talking to the families

was a tough task. Their story had a villain lurking in the shadows too. Reena was an unconventional Jain girl. She was the first one from her family to have a career and this had always irked her Bhabhi. Hence, this lady was always on the prowl to get the girl into trouble. This bhabhi caught them on a date, holding hands. Well, that was it! All hell broke loose. Reena was practically under house arrest. She was made to quit her job and couldn’t leave the house alone. Her dating someone out of the community spread like wildfire. But the girl stuck to her decision – she wouldn’t let go of him. In spite of all the restrictions placed on them, they managed to meet and slowly it became clear that they were very committed to each other. In fact, she had met Sudhir’s parents and they quite liked her. And the couple wanted to elope too. But before they could take such a step, Reena’s father decided to meet the boy. And how the tables turned! After meeting him, her father said to her, “Tum itni stupid lagti ho, tumko itna accha ladka kaise mila?!” Moreover, once their marriage was fixed, Sudhir turned vegetarian! It has been 35 years but their love remains the same!

Story 3: Another childhood love story for the keeps! Rashmi and Uday were neighbours. They grew up together and played together. Belonging to the same community, they were almost like extended families, i.e., their parents were close too. Uday was the perfect mischiefmaker, always upto something and Rashmi, his complete opposite, was quiet and studious. She mostly kept to herself. Maybe this is what attracted Uday in the first place. As the years went by, over picnics, group movie dates, late-night games with cousins, love blossomed between the two. But they could not tell anyone about it as they were still studying and things would get awkward with their families. Yet they passed love letters hidden in magazines and books on the pretext of returning each other’s books. One day, Uday, again upto his antics was selling film tickets in black and was caught red-handed by Rashmi’s father! This incident did not go down well with the old man as in his eyes, Uday was no longer to be trusted. On the other hand, Rashmi who was a good student, flunked! And she was barred from meeting anyone!

However, these things did not affect Uday and Rashmi. They dated for 10 long years. Of course, when they broke the news to their respective families, things weren’t all hunky-dory. But what worked for them was that they belonged to the same communities and had a lot of support from their friends and cousins.

Rashmi and Uday have been happily married for 37 years now and have been together for 47 years!

Love is that unseen force which draws people together. With the touching story of Dinoo-Rustom, Reena-Sudhir & Rashmi-Uday, it is evident that true love always wins despite the obstacles that come in between.
