Ask the travel expert: How to choose between the best itinerary offered by travel companies?

06/07/2018

Two travel companies have given me different prices for the same itinerary and the price difference is vast. What should I do?

While it’s easy to be swayed by a holiday that looks cheap, the right way to do this is to break down all components of your holiday and compare. The price difference could be because of a different category of hotels, quality of vehicles for sightseeing and transfers or tour managers. Check if the holiday is all-inclusive or comes with hidden charges like visa, taxes etc. Another check to have in place is the background of the travel agency you’re booking with. Go with someone your friends or family have already traveled with or someone who has good reviews – it’s more important that your trip does not throw up any unpleasant surprises!

We are planning to go to Prague but heard from a friend that pickpockets and scammers can be a big problem. Is it better to avoid the region altogether, don’t want to take a chance with passport and other documents?

Pickpockets and scammers are not a problem unique to Prague; their play is to target unsuspecting tourists in any big city. Just be vigilant and careful of your belongings, especially passports, currency/cards and mobile handsets like you would in any other new place. Also, make sure you have a good Overseas Travel Insurance plan with coverage for theft and other insurgencies that will help greatly in these situations.

We are taking a group of 80-100 employees on an incentive trip after a particularly great quarter. Which place can you recommend? We are looking for something unique that will be truly rewarding for them.

Congratulations on a great quarter! There are several exclusive experiences which your team can enjoy – a journey into the Scandinavian Arctic Region of Rovaniemi to witness the Northern Lights (winter months are recommended for best viewing) or a trip to exotic Israel which is becoming popular for its beaches, parties and of course the Dead Sea. If time is not a constraint, the Canadian Rockies or the South Island of New Zealand can also offer unforgettable sights and adventure activities.

We are planning a honeymoon trip to South Africa in November. Is it a good time to go? Also, can we club it with Mauritius?

November is a great time to visit South Africa! It is also one of their busiest months and all good hotels generally get sold out much in advance. I would recommend you make your bookings at the earliest to ensure you get the hotels you have in mind. South Africa ideally requires at least 7-8 nights. If you have more time and budget is not a constraint then you should definitely club Mauritius with South Africa.
