CAA Protest leads to a major loss in Assam Tourism

02/01/2020

The tourism sector in Assam has suffered a hard loss in December 2019. The same will seem to continue in January 2020. The estimated loss amounts to Rs 1000 crore. The reason for this loss is the violent protest against the amendment Citizenship act. Not just domestic tourism, the flow from abroad has also seen a great downfall.

The peak season of tourism is from December to March. Due to violence during the protests, the sector suffered badly. We estimate that the loss in December and January will be Rs 500 crore each, says Assam Tourism Development Corporation Chairman Jayanta Malla Baruah.

Because of the impact on the peak season, we expect a 30 per cent fall in tourist footfall in the overall 2019-20 financial year. We hope to slightly recover from this situation in February, he added.
