19/02/2020

Delhi International Airport Ltd, (DIAL) has announced that Delhi’s Indra Gandhi International Airport has become free of single-use plastic. The CEO of DIAL, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said that their objective is to make Delhi airport free from single-use plastic. They are following the line of PM Modi’s initiative to eliminate single-use plastic from India by 2022.

DIAL for its successful implementation of this airport measure is certified by The Confederation of Indian Industry-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development (CII-ITC CESD). Delhi airport is the first one to make a commitment to ‘single-use plastic-free ’. The commitment was taken in September 2018 and over the time the airport has adopted eco-friendly measures which have helped them in achieving the target.

A few items were exempted from the banned list which includes, sealed PET bottles, compostable plastic bags, pre-packaged material and security tamper-evident bags. Delhi airport is the busiest airport in the country with traffic of 68.5 million passengers per annum. It is also the leading airport with cargo and passenger-carrying capabilities. It is expected that such measures will soon be taken by other airports as well.
