20/02/2019

Goa will now create a brand for ‘made in Goa’ products like brass lamps, artefacts made from coconut shells and sea shells, and sell them at stores across the country as well as online. Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) is in the process of selecting a merchandise partners to develop a brand for Goan products.

The issue of selecting a merchandise partner was discussed during the last GTDC meeting and approved by the board, a senior GTDC officer said.

The officer said the merchandise partner have to develop brands for GTDC. “We will open the Goa brand stores across the state at GTDC properties and even work on franchisee model. We’ll also sell them online,” the officer said.

The GTDC official said this will help local artisans as their products would get a brand name and it will help them increase the sale of items. “We will do design, develop, manufacture and sale research,” GTDC senior officer said

The selected merchandise partner will create a brand name and develop a logo for all the products which are sold under Goa brand. The officer said, presently some tourists are being cheated in the name of Goa products, but once GTDC develops Goa brand, tourists will know that these products are manufactured in the state and it will reflect Goan art and culture.

The senior GTDC officer said many products are made in Goa and those items will not be manufactured in rest of the country and these products, which are part of state’s hidden treasure, will get exposure. “Artisans, tourism, and handicrafts should go hand-in-hand to promote Goan heritage and culture,” the officer said

Under CSR activities, hotels would be roped in to promote local products at their properties, the officer further added.
