06/04/2022

April 2, 2022 – Always finding innovative ways to foster a sense of community and authentic experiences, JW Marriott Mussoorie turns a new page yet again by introducing Between the Covers, The Himalayan Book Club.

Inspired by Mussoorie’s own rich literary heritage, the hotel launches this initiative imagined to spark conversation and interaction between hotel guests and writers from around the country. From celebrated authors to shining a light and uncovering new-age novelists — the hotel will host this intimate, enlightening book club session through the year, making this a regular experience for guests to look forward to.

The first visiting writer on the roster is Shunali Khullar Shroff, a Mumbai based author of bestsellers Battle Hymn of the Bewildered Mother and Love in the time of Affluenza. Her writings on modern life, culture, travel and feminism have been featured across a host of publications including Conde Nast Traveller, Mint Lounge, HT Brunch, Vogue, Elle India amongst others. Her works have received plenty applaud for her pithy, humour-laced style of writing, sprinkled with inputs from real life parenting experiences. She will be interacting with guests during the hotel’s traditional Kachdi ceremony, adding a further local touch to the evening.

“I’m delighted to be in Mussoorie, a destination so renowned for its literary legacy, and to be invited to JW Marriott Mussoorie as the first writer on this new, inspiring platform. I’ve spent some of my teenage years in this charming hill town and it holds a very special place in my heart. I’m so happy to be back here and at this beautiful property. I can’t wait to interact with everyone and kick things off for this amazing book club initiative!”

Shunali Khullar Shroff

For years authors of all walks of life have ascended to the beautiful lands of Mussoorie, where its crisp mountain air, stunning views of the Himalayas and storied history have inspired their creative minds to pen masterpieces. From Ruskin Bond, who has lived in Landour since 1963, to Anita Desai, one of India’s finest fiction writers, who was born in Mussoorie. From visitors and literati like Rudyard Kipling, Pearl S Buck, Jawaharlal Nehru to Arvind Adiga and Pankaj Mishra — Mussoorie has for long been a destination associated with literary activity. It even dates back to world famous Victorian author — Charles Dickens — who also has a connection with this glorious hill station! Agatha Christie’s first novel, ‘The Mysterious Affairs of Style’, was based on a sensational murder that occurred at a well-known hotel in Mussoorie in 1911 — another addition to Mussoorie’s long history and connection to literature.

The influx of writers and creativity that has come alive in Mussoorie is definitely noteworthy. In fact, it is said that, for every reader in town, there are at least three writers. Now, JW Marriott Mussoorie aims at inviting even more inspired minds, making it the perfect rendezvous spot and platform to continue building Mussoorie’s literary heritage while empowering guests with some of the finest works in writing and storytelling.

“At JW Marriott Mussoorie, it is our constant endeavour to delight our guests with new experiences and novel ways of connecting to the destination. And we believe that this new initiative will leave our guests with even more fond memories of their time with us.”
