Union Budget 2020: Promoting Nation as hub for tourism

While presenting the Union Budget 2020-21 in parliament, finance minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized on the need for state to play an active and needy role in the development of tourism and identifying such schemes for development of the destinations. The Minister asked the states to prepare a particular roadmap for certain identified travel and tourism destinations and present the financial plans for specific grants from the Centre in 2020-21. 

Minister said, “Growth of tourism directly relates to growth and employment. States have a critical role to play. I expect the state governments to develop a roadmap for certain identified destinations of travel and tourism and formulate financial plans during 2021 against which specified grants will be made available to the states.”

The major development schemes includes establishment of Indian Institute of Heritage and Conservation, converting five archaeological sites in the country into iconic sites with world class infrastructure. Those five identified sites are Rakhigarhi (Haryana), Shivsagar (Assam), Hastinapur (Uttar Pradesh), Dholavira (Gujarat) and Adichanallur (Tamil Nadu). 

A maritime museum would be set up at Lothal – the Harrapan age maritime site near Ahmedabad (Gujarat) by Ministry of Shipping. Nirmala Sitharaman, finance minister of India also proposed more Tejas trains for connecting important tourist destinations in the country as well to boost tourism. 

Nirmala Sitharaman, Finance Minister of India has allocated a budget of INR. 2500 Crore for the development of travel and tourism sector in the country.
